Theoretical Discussion of Intergenerational Relations for Intergenerational Coexistence in Korea
Lee Min-Hong

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to address the theoretical perspectives to promote academic understanding about intergenerational interactions among the old and young people in Korea. Literature review on intergenerational interactions was extensively conducted as a research method. The necessity, concept, type, theory, effect, and promotion alternatives of the intergenerational interaction were explored through the theoretical review of the intergenerational interaction. Results of the literature review showed that intergenerational activities improved psychological and social health at the individual and family levels, resulting in social integration. The type of intergenerational interactions is classified through spatial and continuous dimensions, and there is direct exchange and indirect exchange by characteristics of the interactions. A theory that could explain intergenerational interactions is the contact hypothesis theory, which results in reduced false stereotypes and bias through contact. In conclusion, it is necessary to develop and expand an integrated space for intergenerational activities, to set up a platform for intergenerational relations, and to develop and expand intergenerational exchange programs and practices.
